My mission in lessons is to empower music students to be their own best teachers.
Ryan draws on over 6 years of experience teaching individual lessons in trumpet and jazz to offer high-level personalized instruction. He has previously been employed by the Athens Community Music School, WVU Community Music School, West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Laurel Highlands High School Band teaching lessons to beginners, MS/HS students, undergraduates, and adults. As a studio teacher, he has helped students to earn superior ratings at Solo and Ensemble contests in WV and NY, acceptance in honor ensembles including the Chautauqua All-County Honor Band (NY), WVU Honor Jazz Band, and WVMEA All-State Band, and be awarded merit-based scholarships to study music at the college level.
“I have been teaching instrumental music in the public school system for the past 25 years. I am a graduate of West Virginia University and I currently teach in New York. My daughter is a 7th grade trumpet student in my band. It’s been very important to me that I found her the right “fit” for a private instructor. I was given Ryan’s name by another well-established music teacher, and he has been my daughter’s private trumpet instructor for over a year now. I am absolutely thrilled with Ryan’s ability to connect with my daughter and make her feel motivated to practice and succeed. He is an AMAZING musician, and his pedagogy skills are top notch! He takes time to not only teach the material, but also model, ask questions, listen, offer constructive criticism, and encourage every step of the way. I have seen and heard my daughter flourish on her trumpet. She absolutely loves her learning time spent with Ryan and looks forward to her weekly lessons! I appreciate Ryan for so many reasons and feel blessed to have found him as an instructor for my daughter.”

"Studying with Ryan challenged me to grow and improve extremely fast while studying music that was motivating and inspiring. Through the assignments I had and the recommended resources given to me, I was able to develop more than just musical skills, but also organizational and practice skills. In lessons with Ryan, I was able to study advanced topics relating to jazz that expanded my music taste and ability as a jazz player."

Testimonials
Thanks to the one on one trumpet lessons I received with Mr. Kerwin, I can proudly say I have a much higher knowledge on not only how to play the trumpet in a very effective and efficient manner, but also has allowed me to enjoy playing my instrument far more than before.

"Ryan really helped me understand how to correct myself and what to do to stop myself from getting frustrated and unmotivated. He broke it down into simpler terms which made it easier to understand for beginners, and also rewarded progress and hard work with compliments or acknowledgement which was inspiring"

"Ryan provides an individualized and unique perspective to jazz and improvisation while also providing an amazing fundamental groundwork and understanding of traditional jazz that I think should always be required for new and old students."
