West Virginia-raised trumpeter and composer Ryan Kerwin plays a soulful tone and a measured approach to improvisation. His thoughtful compositions utilize unusual forms and precise arrangments to spotlight the personalities of his collaborators.
He has performed with professional ensembles including the Stephen Phillip Harvey Big Band, the WV Brass Quintet, and the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra. His playing is featured on the NewStream Brass album, “A Step Forward,” Monongahela Brass' EP Mon Brass Plays Michael Kahle.
Kerwin has released two EPs of original compositions featuring his septet and quartet projects. Recorded in May 2021, "Gratitude" is a live-in-studio septet project that captures his development at the Frost School of Music. Each track is a homage to one of Ryan's musical role models. "Color," recorded in March 2024, is a quartet project featuring three compositions refined between 2022 and 2024. The renditions are tailored to spotlight the group's collective voice and accent the soloists' personal styles.
Ryan currently teaches general music at Guilford Elementary in Loudoun County, VA. He has previously taught trumpet and improvisation for the Athens Community Music School, WVU Community Music Program, and West Virginia Wesleyan College, and he has served as an adjudicator and clinician for the West Virginia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference.
